How Modern Decorative Coatings Evolved? From Relief Texture Paste to Microcement

If you’ve been in the interior paint or decorative coating industry for a while, you’ll know that relief texture paste was one of the earliest art finishes. It created bold, 3D textures and was very popular for feature walls in the past.

As interior design trends shifted, new materials like microcement, velvet texture art paint, and other modern texture coatings started to take over. They didn’t just follow trends — they solved many issues found in older products.

So what improved with the new generation of coatings?

1.Smoother, more contemporary aesthetics

For interior wall paint, traditional Relief Texture Paste offers heavy texture, deep ridges, often seen as “dated” today. Microcement, Velvet Texture Art Paint offer soft matte or satin surfaces, minimalistic textures, cleaner visual lines.

2.Better surface uniformity

Older pastes were thick and difficult to control — mistakes were permanent. Newer interior coating systems allow for smoother application, fewer trowel marks, and generally a lower skill requirement for installers.

3. Stronger durability & easier cleaning

Microcement especially brought a leap forward: water-resistant, stain-resistant, harder surface, suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, high-traffic spaces. Compared to old Relief Texture Paste, it’s a big upgrade.

4. More color and finish flexibility

Relief Texture Paste were typically white + glaze color, but modern art paints can achieve: metallic, pearlescent, suede, cloud/marble effects, concrete looks, etc. This opened up way more creative possibilities.

5. Thinner layers & better touch feel, compatibility with more substrates

Old relief textures were thick and rough. Newer coatings work in thin layers (about 1–2 mm), feel smoother, and suit more types of substrates.

Why this evolution happened?

People shifted toward minimalist interiors, easier-to-clean surfaces, and coatings with better durability, lower VOC, and more eco-friendly formulas. The products simply evolved to match today’s design needs and lifestyle.
